The electric light...is medium without a message...

36694.jpgAfter years of seeing the book, The Medium is the Massage on my mom's bookshelf, I finally read Marshall McLuhan. This was his article, The Medium is the Message. Written in the 1960s, it does speak more eloquently than I can to some of our turn of century conditions.

"...the latest approach to media study considers not only the 'content' but the medium and the cultural matrix within which the particular medium operates." Indeed, the medium often becomes part of that content and even of the cultural matrix itself...

"Electric [electronic?] speed mingles the cultures of prehistory with the dregs of industrial marketeers, the nonliterate with semiliterate and and the postliterate [wtf?]. Mental breakdown of varying degrees is the very common result of uprooting and inundation with new information and endless new patterns of information."

To be continued...or not.
